Bishop Michael was the 106th Bishop of Rochester for 15 years, until 1 September 2009. He holds both Pakistani and British citizenship. He has studied, researched and taught at a number of universities and colleges in different parts of the world.
He has worked as a priest and as a bishop in both the United Kingdom and Pakistan. After assisting the Archbishop of Canterbury for the 1988 Lambeth conference, he became General Secretary of the Church Mission Society. Both of these tasks have provided him with a close knowledge of the world–wide Church and especially of the Anglican Communion.
In 1994 he was appointed Bishop of Rochester. He entered the House of Lords in 1999. He is now President of the Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy and Dialogue and has a continuing interest in mission and development issues and also in inter–faith dialogue.
