A RECENT YOUGOV POLL reported that only 2% of young men between 18–24 on these islands considered themselves ‘completely masculine’. 42% of men said that the word ‘masculinity’ gave them a negative impression. Masculinity and ‘being a man’ is, evidently, going out of fashion. There is no doubt that gender identity is in crisis as society struggles with gender definition. What a man is, his behaviour, character and essence, seems up for grabs (at best) and elusive (at worst).
The Irish Men’s Convention – a brand new, annual conference – will consider what masculinity, from God’s perspective, is all about. Knowing who you are as a man, depends upon knowing who God is. True knowledge of self comes from true knowledge of God and it is only the Bible which informs us of both. When it comes to Christian masculinity or manhood, the Bible has much to say about being a godly man. At the core of the Irish Men’s Convention is reading, hearing and understanding what is in the Bible and applying it to life as a man, in the 21st Century.
This first year, we are going straight to the heart of the matter – the heart itself and its spiritual health. It is our core and ‘control centre’. As someone has written, ‘what the heart loves, the will chooses and the mind justifies’. Yet, we are painfully aware that our hearts crave pleasure and things, constantly relegating God to an interest or hobby. Instead of loving God, we slavishly have a love affair with self.
In our culture, manhood becomes defined by the ugliness of the heart. But the gospel changes our hearts; God intervenes to bring salvation, redeeming the hearts of men across time and the nations.
We’d love to see you and are delighted that Vaughan Roberts, who serves St Ebbe’s Church in Oxford, is our main speaker. He is a well known speaker and writer, having spoken at men’s conferences across the world. Bring your church men’s group, friends and anyone else! See you in February 2017.
Yours in Christ
